Our Home X development is delivering more than just 369 homes to the centre of Brighton.

We’ve teamed up with Brighton & Hove City Council and Henry Construction to help kickstart careers by creating a skills and employment partnership plan.

The partnership has already supported 11 apprentices who have been working on the construction of this scheme. They include Stanley and Khymer who have recently become full time employees with Henry Construction.

Stanley said: “I have become a qualified Formworker and am going into employment with Henry (Construction). I have really enjoyed my apprenticeship, it’s been impacted by Covid, but I have managed to stick with it and come through the other side. This apprenticeship has given me a trade for life.”

Khymer said: “I’ve enjoyed the work on Preston Barracks, every day is a learning day and I have become a confident, competent Groundworker. I would like to continue my learning and development and progress into a supervisory role in the future.”

This shows we’re about more than bricks and mortar. One of our strategic priorities is around creating jobs and training opportunities in our communities. It’s great to hear how Stanley and Khymer have thrived during their apprenticeship and we wish them every success in the future.

Linda Shaw, Local Employment Scheme Co-ordinator at Brighton & Hove City Council, said:

“The key to the success on the site at Preston Barracks has been early collaboration between Brighton & Hove City Council’s Local Employment Scheme and Optivo. With advanced planning and the additional involvement of the TrAC Shared Apprentice Scheme we’ve been able to negotiate significant levels of trade apprenticeship placements on the site, giving local people a start on a lifelong career path in the industry.”

Our Home X development forms part of the exciting £300m Preston Barracks masterplan, a partnership between U+I, Brighton & Hove City Council, and the University of Brighton.

This development will create a thriving new community as part of one of the city’s biggest ever regeneration projects.
