Our sustainability performance

We want to help our residents save money on their bills and manage energy costs, improve their health, and reduce environmental impact. We’re also striving to reduce our environmental impact to help manage our costs and to be a more responsible business.image: sustainability strategy

Our Sustainability Strategy sets out how we will reduce out carbon and environmental impacts, providing clear targets on how we will achieve this up to 2025.

The Strategy states how we can

  • improve the energy efficiency of our homes,
  • reduce water use,
  • improve air quality and
  • increase biodiversity.
It also describes how we will buy more sustainable goods and services to reduce our carbon footprint.

We're also committed to investing in the quality, safety and environmental sustainability of homes. This is set out in our Strategic Plan for 2020-25.

Our target is to ensure 92% of our residents are satisfied wiith the quality of their home and 80% of our homes benefit from a high energy efficiency rating by 2025

To achieve our objectives we're involved in a number of proactive national and international projects.

Initiatives we're involved with

You can find out more about these initiatives below:

Sustainable Homes Index for Tomorrow (SHIFT) is the sustainability standard for the housing sector. It is recognised by our regulator the Homes and Communities Agency and backed by Government.

image: SHIFT gold logoSHIFT is an independent assessment and accreditation scheme that demonstrates organisations are delivering against challenging environmental targets. The SHIFT assessment measures how we are doing against over 22 environmental criteria, including CO2 emissions, water use, landfill waste and response to climate change.

It covers every aspect of our business including our homes, offices, and the way we work. Organisations that are assessed receive SHIFT Commended, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum accreditation, depending on their performance.

We’re very proud to confirm we were accredited SHIFT Gold following our most recent assessment.

We remain committed to improving the energy efficiency of our homes which, in turn helps residents to reduce their fuel bills and to live more comfortably. We’ll also help residents to manage their energy bills by delivering energy advice. By reducing emissions from our offices and business travel, we’ll reduce our environmental impact and improve value for money.

ESG Performance

We believe investors should see transparent and consistent reporting across the social housing sector.

So we have chosen to become early adopters of The Good Economy’s May 2020 White Paper “UK Social Housing: Building a Sector Standard Approach to ESG Reporting.”

We've put together an ESG Summary Report for Investors which brings together reporting highlights. This will aid investors forming a view on us and our activities and testing us against UN development goals.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

Optivo aims to ‘think globally and act locally’ and has recently made a commitment to adopt the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

These goals will align with our Strategic Plan 2020-25 and help us assess our contribution to global targets.
There are 17 global goals which were introduced by the United Nations in 2015.

The goals are a response to a call for action urging all countries to work in international partnership to achieve the blueprint for “a better and more sustainable future for all”.

As one of the largest housing associations in the UK, we have a responsibility to take the lead on making positive improvements for people and the planet.

We believe meeting the SDGs promotes our corporate social responsibility, improves investor confidence and attracts new talent to the organisation. We can also demonstrate to residents that we care about impacts we have on the environment and the community.

There are ten of the 17 goals where we are making a direct impact and where we can measure our performance. We can also report annually on the other seven indirect impacts. We’ll use data collected through our SHIFT environmental management KPIs to measure our progress. This way we can work towards achieving continuous improvement.

The goals are listed below:

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR)

Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) came into force on 1 April 2019. It is aimed at increasing awareness of energy costs within organisations.

SECR provides data to the inform the adoption of energy efficiency measures in our homes and operations and seeks to reduce the impact on climate change.

By reporting our carbon reduction performance through SECR, we can provide greater transparency for our residents and funders.
